A Message from Joel Wellnitz
Dear Friends:

As many of you know, Joel Wellnitz lost his wife, Beverly, just shortly before OCTAFest. In accepting his Hall of Honor award, he was unable to express his thoughts as he wished, and asked if we would run the following in our newsletter. We are happy to do so, and join the rest of you as we keep Joel in our thoughts in the days and weeks ahead. Thank you.

Michael Jones

As the late Lil Williams used to say when accepting an award, it's nice to be honored for doing something you love to do. I'm not sure what I've done to deserve this award, but I'll take it, anyway.

I have been an advocate of community theatre for three decades, but I don't have to tell this group how wonderful community theatre is. It enhances the quality of life in any town, regardless of size or population, as well as providing an outlet for those of us who feel the desire, and even the need to express ourselves onstage. The great thing is, there is room for everyone in community theatre, even if you're too shy to walk onstage. There are many important jobs to be filled where the spotlight never shines. And it doesn't matter if you're poor or affluent. You are judged solely on your ability and attitude.

On a personal note, community theatre literally changed my life. I met my wife, Beverly, while rehearsing my first play for Ardmore Little Theatre in 1971. We started dating a few weeks later, and were together for 35 years. She was one of the first to join OCTA, and over the years, served on its board, and on many OCTA committees. She knew the importance of this organization and supported it with her time and money since its inception.

Beverly took me to my first OCTA conference in Stillwater a few months after we had begun dating, and we've attended many others over the years. And even though her health was failing, she worked tirelessly when Ardmore hosted the conference a few years ago, even hosting one of the parties in our home.

Beverly always stayed in the background, allowing me to step into the spotlight. Anything I may have achieved in the theatre, or in life, I owe to her. So, with your permission, I would like to dedicate this award to my beautiful wife who died last month. She was the real star of our family. I am truly humbled to receive this honor. Thank you.

Joel Wellnitz

Heller Theatre of Tulsa and Theatre North of Tulsa Share Top Honors

The Oklahoma Community Theatre Association (OCTA) is proud to announce the results from OCTAFest 2006-2007, the 20th biannual statewide festival of community theatre sponsored by OCTA, held July 6-9, 2006 on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Heller Theatre of Tulsa's production of "The Unexpected Man" by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton; and Tulsa's Theatre North's production of "Who Will Sing For Lena?" by Janice L. Liddell shared honors as Outstanding Production and will represent Oklahoma at the American Association of Community Theatre's Region VI Festival to be held in Alexandria, LA on April 4-7, 2007.

"It's a privilege for Oklahoma to send two productions to AACT Regionals, and it only happened because so many theatres from around the state made the effort to bring a production to OCTAFest," said OCTA Executive Director, Michael Jones. The rules of AACT allow states with ten or more entries in their state festivals to send two representatives to the AACT Regional Festival. "It takes great sacrifice of time and resources to participate in OCTAFest," continued Jones, "and the Board and Staff of OCTA recognize and appreciate the efforts of the participating companies."

Lawton Community Theatre's production of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" was named the Production of Honor, and will be the alternate entry for the AACT Region VI Festival, should one of the other companies be unable to attend.
