What is the Community Theatre Initiative?
OCTA has identified the need to provide personal involvement in an artistic process in areas too scattered to sustain an ongoing theatre organization. OCTA's plan is to provide a theatrical experience for rural residents based on local community and culture, also known as the Community Theatre Initiative (CTI).
The Community Theatre Initiative is based in part on successful initiatives undertaken in other parts of the United States, including the now famous Cornerstone Theatre Company of Los Angeles, and the hugely successful Swamp Gravy project of Colquitt, Georgia.
We are currently looking for interested individuals in the community to approach OCTA for assistance in creating a community theatre. Once that initial contact is made, we will help the group identify/create a community profile that will help establish their audience and local resources. We will act as a resource center for the new company and a connection to over 30 other theatre organizations throughout the state. OCTA will be a clearinghouse of information about artistic and technical availability, a forum of answers on any situation, and will provide workshops when needed.
The Community Theatre Initiative will:
--Provide knowledge and resources of OCTA’s members in the assessment of local area artistic potential;
--Provide technical assistance in creating a theatre piece;
--Provide assistance in establishing a community theatre with our management, fund-raising, technical, and artistic skills, as well as years of experience in operating community theatres.
Right now OCTA has 39 organizational members in 31 out of 77 counties. The goal of our CTI is to bring theatre arts to communities that need assistance. We believe that everyone should experience community theatre and that each community should have an opportunity to discover and enrich their cultural life. From our current member database, we have a number of qualified individuals who can share their talents and expertise among other communities.
